ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Because of their nature, literature compilations often are not acknowledged or cited, but our efforts to understand the biology and anatomy of S. crocodilurus were greatly facilitated by the invaluable compilation by Zhao and Zhao (1994). That source led us to many papers difficult to obtain in the United States, and our ability to acquire them was made possible by assistance from B. Bartholomew, J. Mead, D. Trombatore, and E.-m. Zhao. Their efforts on our behalf are gratefully acknowledged. Translation assistance from W. Downs and Z.-l. Yang was most helpful. S. Evans generously provided the juvenile specimen we scanned, and, through years of conversation and patience, helped us to better understand the intricacies of the lizard skull. Loans of additional specimens utilized in this project were facilitated by J. Mead (NAU), A. Resetar (FMNH), B. Stein (MVZ), and J. Vindum (CAS). HRXCT scanning was performed by R. Ketcham and M. Colbert (they always make it look so easy!). A. Balanoff graciously donated her time in helping with image processing and digital data manipulations. J. Head and M. Polcyn improved this paper with their reviews. We also thank L. Jacobs and L. Taylor for their editorial assistance. Financial support for this research was received from the Geology Foundation at the University of Texas, and from the National Science Foundation (NSF-EF-033-4961).
