Catherine Badgley, Larry Flynn, Lou Taylor, and Louis Jacobs, then graduate students, became friends in the 1970s through field work in the Siwalik Group of Pakistan. Jacobs and Downs met in 1977 when they both were employed at the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. Downs guided Jacobs through the Grand Canyon and taught him the geology of the American Southwest. Will joined the Siwalik Project, which led to many happy expeditions in which the two took part, including more than two decades of productive seasons in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Malawi, Yemen, and Kenya, as well as in Pakistan.
