Jelena Pantel received her BA in Biological Sciences from the University of Chicago in 2003. She is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Texas at Austin in Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior. Previous work includes an internship at Mountain Lake Biological Station during the summer of 2001 as part of the NSF REU program. She also served as an intern at the Summer Systematics Institute at the California Academy of Sciences (NSF REU) during the summer of 2002. Her work in paleoecology analysis of Neogene marine sequences from the Dominican Republic in conjunction with Dr. Carol Tang was conducted there.

In her current research, Jelena is interested in drawing parallels between current theories in ecology and evolution, with a focus on adaptive evolution and its effects on community-level processes. For this work she is focusing on freshwater zooplankton in Michigan ponds as a study system, but hopes to draw broader conclusions about species assemblages in general.
