Dr. Barrie received his B.Sc. from the University of Calgary and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. (1986) from the University of Wales where his research focused on sedimentary processes on the continental shelves of the United Kingdom and Atlantic Canada.  In 1979 he initiated the marine geology program at C-CORE (Centre for Cold Ocean Resources Engineering), Memorial University of Newfoundland, which he managed until 1987.  In 1989 Dr. Barrie joined the Pacific Division of the Geological Survey of Canada and since 1992 he has been Head of the Marine Section.  He is also an Adjunct Professor at the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences (SEOS) of the University of Victoria and Canadian Director of the Circum-Pacific Council.  His research has centred on four areas, 1) Quaternary geology of the Canadian continental shelves, 2) geological hazards on the continental shelf and coastal zone, 3) geoscience for ocean management and habitat, and 4) mechanisms for the formation and preservation of marine mineral deposits.
