Michael Knappertsbusch is curator for micropaleontology at the Natural History Museum in Basel, Switzerland. He studied geology at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zürich.

In 1990 he completed his PhD about coccolithophorids. After a post-doc study at the Free University of Amsterdam (NL) until 1994, he returned to Switzerland where he has been employed at the Natural History Museum in Basel. Michael is interested in the morphological evolution of calcareous marine plankton. For the quantitative investigation of the morphological variability in planktonic foraminifera he became engaged in the development of automated imaging and measurement tools like AMOR and MorphCol.
