Calvin Stevens has been primarily interested in Permian corals and fusulinids of western United States, especially Nevada and California, and Permian corals in several of the allochthonous terranes in both the United States and Canada that were accreted to the craton in post-Paleozoic time. He has published extensively on these two groups of fossils, on the Paleozoic evolution of the cratonic margin in California, and on the positions of allochthonous terranes containing Permian fossils.

Dr. Stevens taught geology at San Jose State University for many years and is now a professor emeritus at that university.
