Duncan is Canada Research Chair in Petroleum Geology at Memorial University in Newfoundland. His current research interests are broadly focussed on using integrated sedimentology and ichnology to refine palaeoenvironmental analysis. This work is of significance to study of conventional sandstone and shale gas reservoirs, and provides research opportunities for several of his graduate students. Duncan's early work was centred on the early evolution of complex animal life at the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary, a theme that is ongoing through collaborative research with researchers at Oxford University.
