Susannah Porter grew up in Seattle, Washington, but traveled widely as a child because her father, Stephen Porter, was a field geologist. She received her bachelor's degree in mathematics from Yale in 1995, and her Ph.D. in biology from Harvard in 2002, where she studied with Andrew Knoll. She is currently an associate professor in the Earth Science department at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Her research interests include the fossil record of early eukaryotes, the influence of seawater chemistry on biomineralization, and the record of early Cambrian skeletal animals.
