Middle Miocene decapod crustacean assemblage from the Tuzla Basin (Tušanj, Bosnia and Herzegovina), with a description of two new species and comparison with coeval faunas from Slovenia

Plain Language Abstract

Although research on Miocene decapod assemblages in Europe has a long tradition, there still are some areas that are largely undersampled. The current area of Bosnia and Herzegovina is among such regions. Here we fill a gap in the knowledge of decapod faunas from this area with the description of a decapod association from the middle Miocene of the Tuzla Basin consisting of three species, two of which are new. The association is dominated by Retropluma minuta sp. nov. Interestingly, the studied settings are interpreted as shallow marine environments, yet the genus Retropluma occurs in deep-water settings today. Apparently, Retropluma had wider bathymetric preferences in the geological past than today. The association from the Tuzla Basin is accompanied by a squat lobster, Munidopsis salinaria sp. nov., and a well-known brachyuran crab, Portunus monspeliensis.
