The research interest of Bastian Mähler focuses on taphonomy. As an experimental scientist he studies decomposition processes under aquatic conditions. Being a member of the DFG research unit 2685 “The Limits of the Fossil Record: Analytical and Experimental Approaches to Fossilization” Bastian Mähler is working on sub-project B3 “The impact of bacterial activity on decay and fossilization of arthropods: An experimental approach”. Within his project he is closely working with the Institute of Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology.

Kathrin Janssen is a microbiologist with a special research interest in the impact of microbial activity on decomposition and mineralization processes. She wants to investigate community composition via 16S rRNA genesequence-analysis, mutual interactions and influence of abiotic factors on bacterial distribution. As her background is medical microbiology, production of antimicrobial substances is also of interest.

Martina Menneken is working on the application of Raman spectroscopy in a wide variety of petrological and material science issues - material identification (crystalline, liquid and gaseous), structural analysis of organic and inorganic materials, and reconstruction of geodynamic processes.

Mariam Tahoun is a PhD student in the group of Christa E. Müller working on the quantitative analysis of organic compounds in biological and fossil samples by HPLC-MS and other bioanalytical techniques. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 2017 from the German University of Cairo, Egypt. In January 2019, she graduated with a Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany, under the supervision of PD Dr. Martin Frotscher. The Master’s thesis discussed method and assay development for the detection and quantification of small drug molecules using LC-MS/MS.

Markus Lagos is a geochemist and currently lab manager at the Institute of Geosciences at the University of Bonn. His main research interests are isotope and trace element geochemistry, geochronology and analytical science with focus on mass spectrometry.

Gabriele Bierbaum is Apl. Professor at the Institute of Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology at the University of Bonn. In cooperation with paleontologists, the group focuses on microbiome studies of bacteria involved in decay and fossilization of crustaceans. Within medical microbiology, antibiotic resistance and new antibiotics are the main research interests of the group.

Research interests are focused on medicinal chemistry of purinergic signaling and orphan G protein-coupled receptors. A broad range of techniques is used including analytical chemistry, biochemistry, organic synthesis, molecular biology and in vitro pharmacology. She contributes to the Research Unit “Fossilization” funded by the German Research Council with her expertise in (bio)analytical techniques.

Jes Rust is Professor for Invertebrate Palaeontology at the Institute of Geosciences at the University of Bonn, Germany. His research interests are focused on the evolution, phylogeny and paleobiology of arthropods and the paleobiology of molluscs. In addition, he is concerned with the origin, nature and importance of Konservatlagerstätten.
