A full-time researcher, he publishes regularly on terrestrial arthropods' taxonomy, systematics, and paleontology, predominantly the Myriapoda, Arachnida, and Insecta clades.

Roberto J. Guerrero is a professor of invertebrate zoology and evolutionary biology at the Universidad del Magdalena (Santa Marta, Colombia). Professor Guerrero is a specialist in Neotropical ants, emphasizing the taxonomy and evolution of the ants of the Dolichoderinae subfamily. Professor Guerrero is curator of the Entomological Collection of the Centro de Colecciones Biológicas of the Universidad del Magdalena (CBUMAG). He is co-editor of the book Hormigas de Colombia. Currently, he is carrying out taxonomic studies of some genera of ants at the level of the Neotropical region and others at the geographic scale of Colombia. Likewise, Dr. Guerrero leads several projects that try to understand the diversity of ants in the tropical dry forest ecosystem in Colombia
