Yoshi Tanaka is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Geology, University of Otago. He works on the morphology and phylogeny of Oligocene dolphins from New Zealand, supervised by the co-author Professor R. Ewan Fordyce. This paper is a part of his thesis. Yoshi will move to a Museum position in Japan in early 2015, and will continue studies on fossil marine mammals.

Ewan Fordyce teaches paleontology and stratigraphy of the New Zealand region and beyond. His research involves the systematics, morphology and evolution of fossil and modern whales and dolphins, and other aquatic tetrapods including penguins. His research affiliations include Smithsonian's Natural History Museum, and Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Ewan is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand.
