Dr
Andy Johnson is a Lecturer in Geology at the University of Derby. He studied
Geology as an undergraduate at the University of Oxford and stayed there to
conduct doctoral research on the palaeobiology of Jurassic scallops. His
interests remained primarily palaeontological during tenure of various posts in
the UK and Germany but broadened to include recent environmental change on
moving to Derby in 1991. He was the instigator of the Queen Scallop research
project, and has contributed a general knowledge of scallop biology and
palaeontology. He is particularly interested in the use of growth increment data
as a source of information on the age, growth and environment of scallops and
other bivalves. Recently, he has investigated the potential of a modern
freshwater bivalve as a biomonitor of heavy metal pollution.
