Born in Prague, 8 January 1931. Educated at the Academic Gymnasium in Prague (Latin and old Greek) 1940-1948, Charles University in Prague (degree in Zoology, Paleontoligy and Geology), postdoc studies in vertebrate paleontology at the University in Munich, Germany under A. v. Humboldt-Grant 1968-1972 (professor R. Dehm).  1954-1989: Czechoslovak Geological Survey in Prague (late Cenozoic Stratigraphy), 1990 – today: professor (emeritus since 1996) of paleontology at Charles University. Interests: Cenozoic Mammals.
