David Elliott graduated from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne with a B.Sc. in Geology in 1974 and a Ph.D. also in Geology from Bristol University in 1979. He then taught for a year each at West Virginia University and the University of Minnesota, Duluth, before spending the last 24 years at Northern Arizona University where he teaches paleontology. His research focuses on the paleobiology, phylogeny, and biostratigraphy of the earliest vertebrates and he is currently working on Devonian faunas from western and arctic North America and western Europe. He has maintained an interest in publishing throughout his career and is a past editor of the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology and technical editor for the Journal of Paleontology.
