I am a botanist and wood scientist at the USDA Forest Service's Forest Products Laboratory at Madison, Wisconsin, where I work primarily on the anatomy, identification and properties of tropical woods. My research on the relationships of ecology and growth conditions to wood anatomy, properties and quality, have taken me to Liberia, Ethiopia, Bolivia, Costa Rica and Mexico. The use of wood anatomy in paleoclimate reconstruction is one of the more fascinating areas of my research.
