Jay
Kelley is Associate Professor of Oral Biology at the College of Dentistry,
University of Illinois at Chicago. He received a BA from Occidental College, an
MA from San Francisco State University – both in biology – and a Ph.D. from Yale
University, in biological anthropology. His research interests focus on the
evolution and paleobiology of Miocene apes. He has investigated issues relating
to reconstruction of diet, positional behavior, sexual and social behavior, and
life history. Throughout his career he has also maintained interests in fossil
hominoid taxonomy, particularly concerning the analysis of variation in sexually
dimorphic species. Most of his recent research effort has been aimed at the
evolution of life history in fossil apes and early humans using the growth
records preserved in teeth. Most recently, he has extended this to
consideration of the role of life history evolution in the evolution of brain
size and cognition in higher primates, including humans. He has also been
active in fieldwork over most of his career, mostly in Pakistan, but including
work in Kenya and Turkey as well.
