I
received an A.B. degree in Physics from Oberlin College in 1965, a Ph.D. in
Geology (Seismology) from Columbia University in 1970. After a post-doc at
Scripps Institute of Oceanography and a 4-month stint in the Soviet Union I
started teaching at MIT, where I stayed in various capacities until 2000. In
January 2001, I took a position at the University of Colorado. Throughout much
of this time, my research has addressed large-scale geodynamics, especially in
Asia, but more recently my interests have grown to include climate change and
geomorphology.
I do my best thinking while walking in the mountains.
