My
first college degree was a BA in Psychology from Stanford in the early 1970's.
After working as a professional river guide in the Grand Canyon for several
years, I returned to college to study geology, receiving a BS from the Northern
Arizona University and an MS from the University of Utah. I've been accused of
putting an interesting rock on a couch and asking it probing questions, so some
of my friends call me a psychogeologist. From the early 80's to the early 90's,
most of my professional work was related to mineral exploration and mine
development (both metals and non-metals). For the past decade most of my
professional work has been environmental permitting for mining projects and for
the use of mineral products as carriers for low toxicity pesticides. From the
mid-1970's to the mid-1980's, my favorite subject was the geology of the
Colorado Plateau, especially as seen from the Colorado River and its
tributaries. Since the mid-1980's I've been fascinated by the tectonics of
western China, also from the perspective of major rivers and their tributaries
(see
Shangri-La River Expeditions).
