Richard E. Chandler received his Ph.D. from
Florida State University and joined the department of mathematics at North
Carolina State University in 1965. In the early 1980s he learned of the
paleontological treasures buried in the coastal plain of North Carolina and
became an enthusiastic avocational [def: one who cultivates a particular
pursuit, study, or science, as painting, from taste, without pursuing it
professionally] paleontologist. He retired from full-time work in mathematics in
2002, in part so he could devote more time to the study of fossil sharks.
