Peter Forey retired recently from a research career at The Natural History Museum, London, where he studied the evolution of fishes, especially coelacanths and primitive teleosts. This work is summarised through classifications and has inevitably led him to consider more about the theory and methods of systematics and nomenclature. He was fortunate enough to witness and participate in the adrenaline-charged debates during the ‘cladistic revolution’ that changed the face of animal and plant classification.
