Jere H. Lipps has just
returned in October from teaching his favorite class
“The Biology and
Geology of Tropical Islands” on the island of Moorea, just 18 km from Tahiti
in the South Pacific. His class had 22 junior and senior university students.
Each picks their own research project after a week of introductory field trips
to the reefs, streams and mountains of Moorea, led by Lipps and his colleagues.
“Teaching in the field is the only way to do it. Lectures and books just can’t
fill in for the real world” he says. “The students learn to be scientists and
some even publish their work in the scientific literature.” For a complete
biobibliography, see
Jere’s web site.
