Jere H. Lipps is professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. Although he is in a biology department, his training was primarily in geology where he first became exposed to the oil industry. He has worked for oil companies as a summer student employee and been associated with it as a micropaleontologist. His primary interest in oil now is the current energy crisis and its consequences for human-kind.

In this photo of Jere overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco, he explains why no oil occurs in the subduction zone complex there known as the Franciscan Formation. Image by Kerry McNaughton, 2007.
