Graduated from The College of Wooster with a BA degree in
geology in 1978. Earned his PhD in paleontology from the University of
California, Berkeley, in 1982. Has been employed at The College of Wooster since
1981, presently as the Lewis M. and Marian Senter Nixon Professor of Natural
Sciences and Geology. Member of the Paleontological Society and the
Palaeontological Association, serving as a North American Representative for the
latter. Research interests include: (1) evolutionary paleoecology and
systematics of marine encrusting and boring faunas (sclerobionts), especially
those in the Ordovician and Jurassic; (2) the development and early diagenesis
of marine carbonate rocks, particularly carbonate hardgrounds; and (3) Eemian
Stage interglacial coral reefs and sea level dynamics.
