Yun Mou received her Bachelor’s Degree in Geology from the Peking University in 1988. She was a researcher at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology，Chinese Academy of Sciences, and received her Master’s degree there.  Later, she studied small mammal fossils under the direction of Dr. Everett H. Lindsay at the Department of Geosciences, University of Arizona, and obtained her Ph. D. in 1999.  She is currently working in Tucson, Arizona.
