Findings of Daphnia (Ctenodaphnia) Dybowski et Grochowski (Branchiopoda: Cladocera) in Cenozoic volcanogenic lakes in Germany, with discussion of their indicator value
The aim of this paper is to describe fossil micro-crustaceans of the Daphniidae from two Cenozoic Maars in Germany and discuss their value for understanding of the environment in water bodies where they were living. All females and ephippia (modified moulting exuvia of females containing resting eggs) from locality Randeck Maar (Later early/early Middle Miocene, about 17-15 m.y.a.) and ephippia from Rott (Late Oligocene, 23-24 m.y.a.) belong to Daphnia (Ctenodaphnia). We conclude that these cladocerans were very common in European Eocene-Miocene water bodies. In case of German volcanogenic Maars, finding of numerous ephippia of Ctenodaphnia, including their clusters, in a fossil layer could indicate shallow water conditions and seasonality in such water body.
