Students make sketches of 30 different kinds of fossils, name them, and assemble them onto a grid that they can eventually interpret as a sequence of environments from land, through beach to shallow ocean.
After this exercise, they are asked to identify as many "fossils" as possible that might be found 50 million years from now, indicating different environments.
