Cinzia Spencer-Cervato was born in Padua, Italy. She graduated in 1984 with a Laurea (MS) in Geology at the University of Padua, the second oldest university in Italy, established in 1222. In 1985 she won a scholarship from the Gini Foundation (Padua) and started a Ph.D. at the ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in Zürich, Switzerland, under the supervision of Kenneth J. Hsu and Helmut Weissert. The topic of the thesis was hydrothermal dolomitization in the Italian Southern Alps. After the Ph.D. was completed in 1990, she was a postdoctoral fellow in Micropaleontology at the ETH until 1994. In 1994 she was appointed Assistant Professor of Geological Sciences and Quaternary Studies at the University of Maine in Orono, USA, where she remained until 1998. For the last year she has been working for Saga Petroleum ASA, Norway. In October 1999 she was awarded by the ETH the title of 'Privatdozent' (Doctor of Science) for the work on the Neptune database.
