Kociolek received his MS in 1983 from Bowling Green State University, working with Dr. Rex Lowe on the diatom flora of the Great Smoky Mountains, and his Ph.D. in 1988 from the University of Michigan in the laboratory of Dr. Eugene F. Stoermer. He spent nearly 20 years as the G Dallas Hanna Chair in Diatom Studies at the California Academy of Sciences, as well as being the Executive Director of that organization for 10 years. He is Director of the Museum of Natural History, and Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, positions he has held since 2008. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles and edited 7 books. His interests include the taxonomy and systematics of diatoms, as well as developing an understanding of their evolutionary histories and patterns of distribution. He is also interested in developing tools to further research on diatom taxonomy, nomenclature and ecology.
