A revision of the Early Jurassic ichthyosaur Hauffiopteryx (Reptilia: Ichthyosauria), and description of a new species from southwestern Germany
Plain Language Abstract
Hauffiopteryx is a small ichthyosaur, 2–3 meters in length, with small, pointed teeth and large eyes. It is known from the Early Jurassic (~182 million years ago) of southwestern Germany and England, but is most abundant in the Posidonia Shale of southwestern Germany, a world famous Early Jurassic fossil locality. Hauffiopteryx contains only one named species, H. typicus; however, there has been some debate as to whether the German and English finds are actually different species. We examined the anatomy of the German Hauffiopteryx specimens in detail in order to answer this question. This study revealed a second species of Hauffiopteryx from Dotternhausen, Germany, Hauffiopteryx altera sp. nov., differing from H. typicus in skull characteristics. We found no evidence that the English and German specimens referred to Hauffiopteryx typicus represent different species. Additionally, we identified the oldest record of Hauffiopteryx from the Pliensbachian of Switzerland, more than two million years older than the German and English finds. Hauffiopteryx is closely related to Stenopterygius + Ophthalmosauridae, the lineage of ichthyosaurs that includes some of the last representatives of the group.

Una revisión del ictiosaurio del Jurásico Temprano Hauffiopteryx (Reptilia: Ichthyosauria), y la descripción de una nueva especie del sudoeste de Alemania
Hauffiopteryx typicus es una especie de ictiosaurio del Jurásico Temprano de Europa para la cual se ha descripto variación morfológica dividida geográficamente entre especímenes de Inglaterra y Alemania. Proveemos una descripción anatómica completa del material alemán para abordar este asunto taxonómico. También identificamos y describimos una nueva especie de Hauffiopteryx de la cuenca Alemana suroeste, Hauffiopteryx altera sp. nov., que difiere de H. typicus en la morfología del arreglo de los elementos craneanos que rodean las narinas externas. Un análisis filogenético recupera el material alemán e inglés referido a H. typicus como grupos hermanos, sugiriendo que éstos son de hecho coespecíficos. H. typicus forma un grupo monofilético con H. altera y un espécimen del Pliensbachiano de Suiza previamente referido a Leptonectes tenuirostris pero consistente with H. typicus. Concluimos que Hauffiopteryx representa un género válido, definido por un conjunto de sinapomorfías tanto del cráneo como del post-cráneo. Un análisis de parsimonia recupera a Hauffiopteryx como taxón hermano de Stenopterygius + Ophthalmosauridae.

Hauffiopteryx typicus est une espèce d’ichthyosaure du Jurassique ancien d’Europe, pour laquelle une variation morphologique géographique entre les spécimens d’Angleterre et d’Allemagne a été mise en évidence. Nous fournissons une description complète de l’anatomie du matériel allemand pour s’attaquer à ce problème taxinomique. Nous identifions et décrivons également une nouvelle espèce d’Hauffiopteryx du sud-ouest de l’Allemagne, Hauffiopteryx altera sp. nov., différant d’H. typicus par la morphologie et la disposition des éléments crâniens entourant les narines externes. Une analyse phylogénétique identifie les échantillons anglais et allemands attribués à H. typicus comme groupes-frères, suggérant qu’ils sont effectivement conspécifiques. Hauffiopteryx typicus forme un groupe monophylétique avec H. altera sp. nov. et un spécimen du Pliensbachien de Suisse précédemment attribué à Leptonectes tenuirostris mais cohérent avec H. typicus. Nous concluons qu’Hauffiopteryx représente un genre valide, défini par une série de synapomorphies de la tête osseuse et du post-crânien. L’analyse de parcimonie identifie Hauffiopteryx comme groupe-frère du clade Stenopterygius + Ophthalmosauridae.

Revision des frühjurassischen Ichthyosauriers Hauffiopteryx (Reptilia: Ichthyosauria) und Beschreibung einer neuen Art aus Südwestdeutschland
Hauffiopteryx typicus ist eine frühjurassische Ichthyosaurierart aus Europa, für die eine geographisch aufgeteilte morphologische Variation für Stücke aus England und Deutschland beschrieben wurde. Wir liefern eine vollständige anatomische Beschreibung des deutschen Materials zur Lösung dieser taxonomischen Frage. Ebenso identifizieren und beschreiben wir eine neue Art von Hauffiopteryx aus dem südwestlichen Germanischen Becken, Hauffiopteryx altera sp. nov., die sich von H. typicus morphologisch durch die Anordnung der cranialen Elemente um die externen Nares unterscheidet. Eine phylogenetische Analyse bringt das deutsche Material wieder mit dem englischen zusammen, das als Schwestertaxon zu H. typicus bezeichnet wird, was darauf hinweist, dass beide tatsächlich konspezifisch sind. H. typicus bildet eine monophyletische Gruppe mit H. altera und einem Exemplar aus dem Pliensbachium der Schweiz, das zuvor als Leptonectes tenuirostris bezeichnet wurde, aber mit H. typicus übereinstimmt. Wir kommen zu dem Schluss, dass Hauffiopteryx eine gültige Gattung darstellt, die durch eine Reihe von Synapomorphien sowohl im Schädel als auch im Postcranialskelett definiert ist. Die Parsimonanalyse stellt Hauffiopteryx als Schwestertaxon von Stenopterygius + Ophthalmosauridae auf.

Hauffiopteryx typicus to gatunek wczesnojurajskiego ichtiozaura z Europy, w którym stwierdzono zależne od paleogeografii zróżnicowanie morfologiczne dla okazów pochodzących z Anglii i Niemiec. W celu rozwiązania problemów taksonomicznych, praca dostarcza kompletny opis anatomiczny materiału niemieckiego. Zidentyfikowano i opisano nowy gatunek Hauffiopteryx z południowo-zachodniej części Basenu Niemieckiego, tj. Hauffiopteryx altera sp. nov., różniący się od H. typicus morfologią rozmieszczenia elementów czaszki wokół nozdrzy zewnętrznych. Zgodnie z analizą filogenetyczną, niemiecki i angielski materiał przypisany H. typicus stanowi dwa taksony siostrzane, sugerując ich konspecyficzność. Wraz z H. altera, H. typicus tworzy grupę monofiletyczną, zaś okaz z pliensbachu Szwajcarii uprzednio oznaczony jako Leptonectes tenuirostris jest zgodny z H. typicus. Reasumując, Hauffiopteryx stanowi prawomocny rodzaj, zdefiniowany przez zestaw synapomorfii zarówno z czaszki jak i pozostałego szkieletu. Według analizy parsymonicznej, Hauffiopteryx jest siostrzanym taksonem względem Stenopterygius + Ophthalmosauridae.
