author schaedelMario Schädel. Institute for Evolution and Ecology, University of Tübingen, Auf der Morgenstelle 28, 72076 Tübingen, Germany. (Corresponding author) mario.schaedel@gmail.com

The author studied biology and geoecology at the University of Tübingen and after his graduation took on a doctoral position at the
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich), where he studied the evolution of parasitism in Isopoda (woodlice and relatives) based on fossil material. Mario Schädel currently holds a technical position at the University of Tübingen, where he is involved in data analysis and teaching. In parallel, he continues his studies revolving around the evolution of arthropods, particularly insects, and develops and refines of palaeontological imaging techniques. He is also a huge advocate for the use of open source software in science and regularly shares his software tools and workflows on his website or his therein linked GitHub repository.

author schubertRichard Schubert. Berlin-3D-Art, Blücherstr. 55, 10961 Berlin, Germany. schubert@berlin-3d-art.de

The author studied physics in Bayreuth (Germany) and Grenoble (France), finishing with a diploma thesis on diffuse x-ray scattering to
investigate order/disorder phenomena in molecular crystals. He made his PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching near
Munich and General Atomics in San Diego (US) where he developed a microwave reflectometer for measuring the electron density profile in a
magnetic nuclear fusion device. With the corporate research division of the company Siemens he worked for many years on microwave sensors
(radar) for the railroad and energy sectors (gas turbines). He finally got self-employed based on an invention for taking 3D images by means of a flatbed scanner. His current focus is on consultancy in the art/science and railroad areas for the European Commission, as well as the energy sector, where he currently works with a partner on the "Berlin Nuclear Security Summit", an expert conference on the security of the civil nuclear infrastructure in Europe.
