Steve May received his M.S. in geology from the University of California at Riverside in 1981 and his Ph.D. in geoscience from the University of Arizona in 1985. He worked at ExxonMobil as a research geologist from 1985 until he retired in 2014. Steve then joined the Texas Vertebrate Paleontology Collections, The University of Texas at Austin, as a research associate where he studies Neogene mammals and implications for biogeography and paleoenvironments.
