He is currently an academic and researcher at the Institute of Earth Sciences of the Austral University of Chile.

Marcelo combines fossil records and paleobiogeographic analyses to reveal how environmental changes throughout the Cenozoic shaped marine and vertebrate biodiversity in Chile and the South American Pacific. He is a principal researcher at the Center for Advanced Studies in Arid Zones in northern Chile.
