Diversification dynamics of the Mesozoic ostracod family Cyprideidae Martin, 1940: Disentangling taxonomic inflation and environmental drivers
Plain Language Abstract
Cyprideidae Martin, 1940 is an extinct family of non-marine ostracods, commonly known as seed-shrimps. They were dominant components of non-marine environments, mainly during the mid to late Mesozoic period. Thanks to their abundant and well-preserved fossil record, Cyprideidae have been the focus of many paleontological and stratigraphic studies, but their evolutionary dynamics have received comparatively less attention so far. In this study, we collected fossil records of Cyprideidae from Europe, Africa, and the Americas from existing literature to explore their diversity dynamics through time. We also analyzed whether changes in their diversification dynamics were linked to various external environmental factors. Because it has been suggested that the diversity of Cyprideidae may have been overestimated due to taxonomic oversplitting, we tested how our results changed when assuming a high rate of taxonomic inflation. We found that Cyprideidae underwent a major burst of diversification around the Jurassic–Cretaceous transition, even when accounting for possible overestimation of diversity. However, identifying the environmental drivers behind these dynamics proved difficult. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the evolutionary history of this once-dominant ostracod family.
