Species that were not considered
Schudack and Schudack (2009) performed an extensive review and reexamination of the ostracod assemblages of the Iberian Peninsula. They presented a revised checklist of biostratigraphically important ostracods including Cypridea but mentioned that they will provide detailed taxonomic revision on a different paper. While the taxonomic revision for the non-cypridean ostracods were published (Schudack and Schudack, 2012), cypridean counterpart remains unpublished. Schudack and Schudack (2009)’s checklist does not include three species described by Kneuper-Haack (1966): Cypridea encisiensis, C. moneta, and C. rotunda. As they mention that some species described by Kneuper-Haack were synonymized to other names, it is very likely that these species names might be redundant. To be more conservative towards taxonomic inflation, we decided to exclude fossil occurrences of these species.
Numerous cyprideid occurrences, mostly belonging to the genus Bisulcocypridea Sohn, are known from the uppermost Cretaceous to Lower Eocene of North America (e.g., Swain, 1949; Peck, 1951; Swain, 1964; Sohn, 1969; Fouch, 1979; Fouch et al., 1987; Swain, 1987; Brouwers and De Deckker, 1993; Cifelli et al., 1999; Difley et al., 1999; Belt et al., 2005; Ingalls and Park, 2010; Antonietto et al., 2022). Bisulcocypridea was erected by Sohn (1969) based on the type species Bisulcocypridea bicostata, described from the Pine Valley Quadrangle of Nevada. He first tentatively suggested an Aptian age for the type locality of B. bicostata, but later studies recovered B. bicostata mostly from Paleocene deposits (e.g., Fouch, 1979; Swain, 1987; Cifelli et al., 1999), indicating a much younger origin of the species. To date, the fossil record of Bisulcocypridea in North America is known from the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) to the Lower Eocene, which is temporally separated from other North American cyprideid records. However, occurrences of Bisulcocypridea from East Asia are known as early as the Aptian period (e.g., Wang, 2024), indicating their possible origin in this region (though Sames, 2011, suggests that Cypridea minuta Peck, known from the Aptian of North America, might belong to the lineage leading to Bisulcocypridea). Also, some ostracod assemblages that include Bisulcocypridea have been suggested to represent migrants from East Asia (Swain, 1999; Sames, 2011). Therefore, to take a more conservative approach, we decided to exclude the fossil occurrence of Bisulcocypridea.
We also excluded the records of Cypridea zalanyii described by Cséfán and Tóth (2018) from the Albian of Hungary. It is temporally separated from other European records by a considerable margin, and since Cséfán and Tóth (2018) noted its resemblance to the East Asian Mongolocypris species: Mongolocypris globra (Hou) and Mongolocypris kohi Choi and Huh, we suspect that this species may represent a secondary migration of Cyprideidae from Eastern Eurasia to Western Eurasia. Thus, the records belonging to this species were also excluded.
