author kiraKira E. Westaway. School of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Macquarie University, NSW 2109, Australia. kira.westaway@mq.edu.au

Kira E. Westaway is a geochronologist that uses luminescence dating to establish when modern humans dispersed across Southeast Asia en route to Australia. She is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Natural Sciences at Macquarie University in Sydney but originally received her BSc in Liverpool and MSc in Royal Holloway (UK), MRes in Hong Kong and her doctorate in the University of Wollongong (Australia). As part of an international research team she provided chronological control for the ‘Hobbit’ discovery at Liang Bua cave, Indonesia and established chronologies for modern human arrival at the site of Lida Ajer in Sumatra and Tam Pa Ling in northern Laos. More recently she established a timeline for the extinction of Homo erectus at Ngandong, the presence of Denisovans in northern Laos at Cobra Cave and the extinction of Gigantopithecus blacki in southern China.

Ru Sauthor rumith. Department of Geology, Universiti Malaya, 50603, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. ru.d.a.smith@gmail.com

Professor Ru Smith has a PhD in geology from Cambridge University, specialising in the sedimentology of deep-water depositional systems. During a career in industry he held Principal Technical Expert and Chief Geoscientist roles for Shell before returning to academia. In recent years he has been making extensive use of microtomography to solve problems in palaeontology and mineralogy and in the current study executed the rendering and segmentation of the CT dataset (also providing 3D prints), in the process correcting earlier misinterpretations. His recent publications address topics ranging from palaeoenvironments of Cretaceous amber (and the earliest known fossil skink) to the history of stratigraphic geology, and aspects of fluorite crystallography.
