Govender obtained her MSc and PhD in Karoo Palaeontology at the University of the Witwatersrand. Currently, she is curator/scientist in Cenozoic Palaeontology, Iziko Museums of South Africa and Honorary Research Associate in the Department of Biological Sciences at University of Cape Town. Her research focuses on the Mio-Pliocene fossil marine mammals from the west coast of Southern Africa to understand the marine mammal constitution and their environment as well as the changes that have occurred in both over the past 5 million years.
