Jon J. Smith is an Associate Scientist with the Kansas Geological Survey and Courtesy Professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Kansas. He has extensive research experience in continental and marine ichnology, sedimentology, isotope geochronology, and paleontology. Current research projects have focused on the chronostratigraphy and depositional history of Neogene deposits in the High Plains of North America by using lithofacies analyses and U-Pb dating of detrital and volcanogenic zircons. In addition to utilizing the record of stratigraphically frequent volcanic ashbeds in these deposits, he has also been exploring the utility of paleosols, as time-rich stratigraphic intervals, to act as hosts for concentrations of volcanogenic zircons from contemporaneous ashfall events. Dr. Smith is also the project coordinator and a lead mapper for KGS in its participation in the USGS STATEMAP geologic mapping program.
